The Dina Ciraulo Filmmaking Scholarship honors the filmmaking, art, and teaching of Dina Ciraulo by recognizing an outstanding student film produced at ÃÈ·µ¼º½.
About Dina Ciraulo
Dina Ciraulo was a Professor of Cinema at City College of San Francisco and a seasoned and passionate educator for over 18 years until she passed away in 2016 after a year and a half battle with ovarian cancer. Dina had a profound love of her students and teaching. She was passionate about diversity and gender equity in the media.
Ciraulo’s feature film Opal, about self-taught naturalist and cult icon Opal Whiteley, premiered at the 2010 Mill Valley Film Festival. Opal was awarded the Nell Shipman Directing Award from the Long Island Film Festival, two screenwriting awards, an Individual Artist Grant from San Francisco Arts Commission, a FilmHouse Residency from the San Francisco Film Society, Honorable Mention from the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, and a spot in the Ninth Street Film Center Artist Incubator Program.
Ciraulo’s short films have screened internationally, including the Telluride Film Festival, the SXSW Film Festival, the Hamptons International Film Festival, and the European Media Art Festival.
Dina attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, where she was awarded the Van Lier Scholarship. Dina had a BA in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley and an MFA in Film Production from San Francisco State University.
Requirements for Applicants
- Are you a Cinema Major?
- Have you completed 7 units of Cinema Department courses?
- Are you currently enrolled at ÃÈ·µ¼º½ and have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better?
- Have you completed a strong student film?
- Will you be continuing at ÃÈ·µ¼º½ or transferring to a baccalaureate granting institution in Fall 2024?
If so, you are eligible for the Dina Ciraulo Filmmaking Scholarship. The award of $500 will be announced at the 2024 City Shorts Festival. Note that while not a requirement, the jury will give special consideration to applicants with financial need and queer filmmakers, women, and people of color.
