Department Offerings
The Child Development and Family Studies Department is very complex. We have four major areas of program information, each boasting a diverse set of options for a variety of goals and specialties.
Credit Courses in Child Development and Family Studies
Over 100 sections of courses on child development topics! Earn an AS degree with a major in Child Development, or certificates in various interest areas, the AS-T degree is also available for students interested in transfer. Courses are offered during the day, evenings, and weekends at most of the ÃÈ·µ¼º½ sites throughout the City. Certificates, Permits, Degrees, Credentials
CDEV certificates are tied to specific areas of expertise recognized by employers and the field. Students can earn Child Development Permits by completing courses at ÃÈ·µ¼º½ as they develop their professional careers. Our PDP advisors are available to certify permit applications for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The Department also offers an AS degree in Child Development and a range of courses that support transfer to 4-year colleges and universities. Students can also enroll in pre-credential, lower division courses required for the K-12 teaching credentials in California. We are here to support your college and career success!
Transfer and Graduation
Counselors are available to meet with CDEV students to develop Educational Plans, submit graduation and certificate applications, and obtain transfer, graduation, and academic support. Specific cohort programs and student support efforts funded by a wide range of funders are available to assist CDEV students interested in transfer, graduation, permit application support, and career development. A. Family Child Care Training Program
Courses, resources and services specifically for family child care providers are available through the department. Classes are offered each semester for family child care providers, these courses are numbered as "CDEV 41" classes and most are 1 unit. To support the working child care provider many classes are offered at nights, on the weekends and bi-lingually. Check the on-line class schedule for course offerings.
B. Special Needs Project
We believe that all children deserve an equitable education and we strive to help make that a reality by offering high-quality coursework and support for special educators. The Special Needs Program offers integrated and content-specific coursework to professional early childhood and K-12 educators with the vision of more effective teaching and supporting children with exceptional needs and their families in San Francisco. Courses that lead to a Special Needs Certificate are available on a wide variety of topics each semester. As San Francisco moves towards more inclusive settings for children with a wide variety of special needs, all educators will need additional content and support. C. SF Early Childhood Professional Development Project
A resource & support center designed to assist early childhood professionals with career, permit, coursework, & employment information. Advisors can provide career and CDEV permit assistance. D. Teacher Prep Center
Individuals interested in becoming K-12 teachers can receive advising, pathway and transfer support, resources and information on related activities including, mentoring, Future Teachers Club, field experience opportunities and specific course offerings for future teachers. E. Safe Start
Enroll in CDEV 100 and 101 and continue coursework to earn a certificate in Violence Prevention. Violence prevention training program and certificate for early childhood professionals. For information on in San Francisco, Child Abuse Prevention and the Safe Start Campaign visit .
F. School-Age and Youth Worker Program
School-Age and Youth Worker Program: Individuals interested in becoming school-age or youth workers in after school or recreational settings are encouraged to enroll in courses leading to the Youth Worker Certificate. Additional courses for youth workers can be found in a variety of departments, including Health Education and IDST. A. Child Development Training Consortium
Supports training and professional growth by offering tuition reimbursement for those working in the field. Also provides reimbursement for the cost of obtaining the child development permit. B. San Francisco Child Care Facilities and Demographic Information

C. Pathways for Students
The CDEV Dept. offers programs and courses for dual-enrollment SFUSD students, CHALK Youth Internships, Teacher Academy, and future teacher / para-professional pathway students and specific cohorts in San Francisco. Contact Anne Chan at alchan@ccsf.edu
D. Financial Support
ÃÈ·µ¼º½ has a variety of financial supports for students, contact Financial Aid and submit a FAFSA in order to become eligible for federal and state aid programs. The ÃÈ·µ¼º½ Scholarship Office has many scholarships that are available including several that are specifically for CDEV students. The DEBS Scholarship, the Kate Rosen Scholarship, the Osher Scholarship, and several others are specific scholarships that CDEV students may be eligible for. For information contact the Financial Aid or Scholarship Offices at ÃÈ·µ¼º½. Students also can apply for a payment plan to pay tuition through the Financial Aid office at ÃÈ·µ¼º½.
E. Working Adult Degree Program
Evening, weekend and online cohort program for working adults interested in graduation and transfer. Information on CDEV GE courses utilized. Contact WADP@ccsf.edu.
A. Child Development Centers
Child Care and Development Centers serve ÃÈ·µ¼º½ student - parents and community families and their children. The centers also provide practicum training sites for students-our teachers in training:
- Campus Child Development Laboratory School at Ocean Campus - Preschool - BUNG 212 and 213
- Mission Child Development Center at the Mission Campus - Preschool
- Rocky Mountain Parent Participation Nursery School - Castro - Preschool

B. Family Resource Center
Remote and OnLine services during COVID restrictions
The Family Resource Center (FRC) at Mission Campus provides childcare and parenting resources for ÃÈ·µ¼º½ students to support successful completion of studies. Because the Mission has many ESL students resources will be available in Spanish as well as English for students who require bilingual services. ÃÈ·µ¼º½ supports students who are also parents!

D. Lactation Center
The Child Development & Family Studies Dept. operates Effie's Room in the Campus Center at BUNG 213 on the Main Campus. The room provides access to new moms who need to use a private lactation area. Baby-changing facilities, a refrigerator, and privacy are available during the day. The area is open on a first-come, first-serve basis during the school year or by monthly reservation and is generally open between 9-4 daily. Funded by the Orfalea Foundation, the lactation center provides support to new breastfeeding moms who are working or attending school. Employees and students are invited to use the facility. E. Parent & Infant and Parent & Child Classes
Adult education classes designed for parents and children at all our campuses. Enrollment information can be obtained by calling 415-239-3172 or to view the list of classes go to the visit the ÃÈ·µ¼º½ Class Schedule and search for Child Development- Child Observation Courses.
F. Parenting Series for Parents and Guardians
Lectures for parents and guardians on a wide range of parenting topics.
G. Positive Parenting Classes
Classes for meeting court mandated parenting education requirements. Search the Non-credit section of CDEV inn the current class schedule.
