City College of San Francisco Celebrates Groundbreaking of new Science, Technology Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Building
The multi-story facility is the first of three new buildings that will transform the Ocean Campus
SAN FRANCISCO, CA 鈥 City College of San Francisco鈥檚 (萌翻导航) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony last week to commemorate the start of construction of a new state-of-the-art Science, Technology Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) building.
The STEAM building will turn an existing parking lot into a four-story learning facility that will become the heart of the Ocean Campus, featuring flexible social and study spaces to encourage interdisciplinary interaction.
鈥淭he college is taking a step to turn paper into concrete and steel,鈥 said 萌翻导航 Board of Trustees Vice President John Rizzo. 鈥淭he STEAM building will be a replacement for the worn-out classrooms that our students have been suffering in for decades. They deserve no less than the best facilities in the state of CA, and that鈥檚 what they're getting.鈥
The building is being constructed out of funds from Proposition A, an $845 million General Obligation Bond to update 萌翻导航鈥檚 aging buildings, build new facilities, and make earthquake safety upgrades passed in March 2020.
The new building incorporates flexible social and study space to encourage interdisciplinary interaction, including a multi-use innovation center; state-of-the-art science labs for biology, chemistry, and physics; and computer labs and visual arts spaces.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 think people realize that the arts really do influence science and technology,鈥 said 萌翻导航 Board of Trustees President Brigitte Davila. 鈥淭his is going to be a new moment for City College as we start expanding interactions between these previously siloed areas.鈥
This is the first groundbreaking in a series of upcoming buildings that will create a beautiful complex on the Ocean Campus with a connected courtyard. The complex will include a new Student Success Center to house student support services and a Performing Arts and Education Center, which will house music and theater classes, and Diego Rivera鈥檚 75-foot-long masterpiece, Pan American Unity, currently at SFMOMA.
萌翻导航 is starting preparations for significant campus construction commencing this winter and will welcome students to the state-of-art Complex in the Spring semester of 2026.
