City College of San Francisco Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting and Supporting Undocumented and LGBTQIA+ Students
Fostering a Community Where Inclusion and Diversity Are Essential, ÃÈ·µ¼º½ Issues a Critical Resolution to Support Students' Right to Equal Treatment and Respect.
San Francisco, California (February 3, 2025) – City College of San Francisco’s (ÃÈ·µ¼º½) Board of Trustees adopted a historic resolution reaffirming the College’s commitment to protecting and supporting undocumented and LGBTQIA+ students, recognizing the importance of providing an inclusive and equitable educational environment.
These students often face unique challenges, including discrimination, bullying, and lack of access to resources. As an institution devoted to the success and well-being of all students, City College remains committed to implementing comprehensive anti-discrimination policies, providing support services, and promoting awareness and acceptance through education.
With a new national administration assuming office, federal policy changes have been coming at a rapid pace. Undocumented students and LGBTQIA+ students, particularly trans students, are facing uncertain and fearful futures. This new policy environment has led the College to reaffirm its commitment to its students.
City College of San Francisco has a policy in place, which aligns with state law, that prohibits the College’s police from participating in immigration enforcement and does not allow immigration enforcement agents to conduct investigations on campus without a judicial warrant. Additionally, the college reaffirmed its commitment to protecting students' privacy and data.
In their resolution, the Board of Trustees affirmed that “City College of San Francisco unequivocally supports the fundamental belief that every person should be treated with dignity and respect and has a right to exist and be who they are without fear of reprisal.
As an educational institution grounded in social justice and emboldened by the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, anti-racism, kindness, compassion, and acceptance, City College of San Francisco has been, is, and will continue to be a safe and welcoming place for learning, individual expression and fostering a sense of self and community understanding.â€
The College remains committed to ensuring that undocumented and trans students feel welcome and protected on campus, so they can focus on learning and reaching their academic goals.
By creating safe spaces and ensuring equitable opportunities, ÃÈ·µ¼º½ empowers students to thrive academically and personally. As a public educational institution, the College continues to engage with students, educators, and policymakers in working together to uphold the dignity and rights of all students, ensuring that diversity is celebrated and respected.
Anita Martinez, City College’s Board President, shared: “This is a pivotal moment in history. As a pillar of San Francisco's vibrant community, City College must and will stand for the rights and protections of our students. They need to know we support them with words, resources, and policies, and their presence is respected and valued.â€
Interim Chancellor Mitchell Bailey said: “We all recognize the anxiety, stress, and uncertainty experienced by our undocumented and LGBTQIA+ students. Our continued support, understanding, and vigilance is critical to ensure that all students feel safe and welcome in all spaces at City College.â€
