Peer Tutor Position Description:
Successful applicants will provide peer tutoring for English composition and reading for students enrolled in ÃÈ·µ¼º½ English courses but also in other subjects that have written and reading assignments.
Peer tutors support students’ learning by reviewing class material, identifying learning difficulties, formulating ideas for papers, working on solutions to problems and providing useful study skills to students that need supplemental help.
Responsibilities:
- Provide academic support during assigned hours.
- Be punctual, use time for academic tasks, and focus on the students’ needs.
- Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing any lecture notes, handouts, and/or textbook.
- Exercise professional discretion at all times. We encourage conversation with other staff to enhance tutoring skills, but you should always conduct such conversations with tact and care. Information about students should not leave the confines of the lab.
- Participate in outreach activities and training classes.
Qualifications:
- Have an A in English 1A or above and a faculty recommendation
- Federal Work Study eligible
- Excellent time management, oral and written skills
- A desire to help others
- Enrolled in at least 6 units / International F-1/ M-1 students 12 units
- Have a heart for supporting other students and a respect and celebration of diversity
Recruitment Timeframe:
The center hires peer tutors on a continuous basis. Tutors are chosen through a selective process based on qualifications, instructor recommendation(s), and an interview with the lab coordinator.
If you are selected to move forward in the hiring process after the interview, your first day will be about two to four weeks after, depending on how fast SHEP is completed.
New tutors will be paid to take an online training course, LERN 10. It is an asynchronous class offered in spring and fall semesters. The six week in person class will be taken if hired at the start of the semester. (One 1.5hr class per week)
